The United Nations Environmental Program contracted with EESI to develop a regional vision to reduce dependency on landfills in Caribbean island nations and prevent marine litter, specifically plastic waste and assure that waste is mangemd in an envirnmentally-sound manner. This engagement included EESI facilitating work sessions amongst government officials and solid waste professionals from 12 nations, and developing a regional action plan.
EESI was part of a team to help Lorain County, Ohio assess the feasibility of converting pre-consumer food scraps into a marketable product. EESI preprared a financial pro forma of the capital and operating expenditures, as well as potential revenue of a food scrap recovery system. EESI also evaluated the potential for food waste generators to source-separate food scraps, and conducted a regional market analysis for securing feed stock and selling the mulch and compost.
In Raleigh, North Carolina, the city charges residents the same amount regardless of the amount of waste they set out. The city desired to increase recycling and was considering a PAYT fee structure to financilly incentivize recycling. EESI helped the city assess the impact of PAYT through benchmarking, evaluating participation by collection route, and analyzing the relationship between fee structures and recycling rates.
