The City of Olathe Solid Waste Division provides an integrated waste management system for residents and businesses, who highly value division’s services. However, the city's population and commercial development is increasing. Thus, the division wanted to address future waste management needs, as well as optimize the performance and efficiency of the existing system. EESI was part of a team of professionals to develop a long-term, strategy that included an operations action plan to assure sufficient funding and capacity to manage the city's waste, recyclables and compostables
EESI collaborated with SWACO and other solid waste professionals to develop a strategic plan to increase the efficiency of their drop-off recycling system, improve the quality of material recycled, and decrease illegal dumping. Because of this strategic plan, the number of drop-off sites was decreased by over 60%, but the annual amount of recyclables is projected to decrease by only 10%. In addition, the cost per ton to operate the program is estimated to decrease by approximately 60%, while contaminatoin is forecasted to decrease by 40%.
ESSI conducted a strategic planning process with the island nation of Saint Lucia to design a community-based, national waste strategy to establish a sustainable solid waste infrastructure for the next 20 years.
As a result of this planning process, Saint Lucia developed a strategic approach to assure consistent and efficient waste collection, use waste as a resource, educate children on the importance of proper waste management, establish a system to recover plastic bottles and secure long-term disposal capacity.
